Women's Swimmers Trip Michigan State, Men Fall

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Erica Rose (Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken School) brought home two first-place finishes as the Northwestern women's swimming and diving team snuck past Michigan State for a 114-109 victory Friday night. It was the first dual meet competition for the Wildcats in 56 days.
Battling an injured shoulder, Rose captured the title in the 1000 freestyle in a winning time of 10:10.43. She followed up the effort with a victory in the 400 individual medley, touching in at 4:29.11. Rose also added a runner-up finish in the 500 free (5:03.84).
Northwestern also got first-place finishes out of Vicky West (Redlands, Calif./Redlands) in the 500 free (5:02.27), Erin Swenson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) in the 200 free (1:52.90), Carmen Cosgrove (Perth, Australia) in the 100 free (52.73) and the 400 free relay team of Swenson, Cosgrove, Paige Nath (Wichita, Kan./Trinity Academy) and Sara Petric (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) (3:28.52).
On the men's side, the Spartans disposed of the Wildcats 131-91. NU picked up four first-place finishes.
Kellan O'Connor (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy Preparatory) won the 200 IM in 1:53.34, Mark Hamming was first in the 100 butterfly (49.65) and Tony Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) captured the title in the 100 free (46.16). O'Connor and Swanson teamed with Louis Torres (Morton Grove, Ill./Niles West) and Matt Wever (Boise, Idaho/Boise) to win the 400 medley relay in 3:24.06).
Both teams return to action at noon Saturday when they travel to Ypsilanti, Mich. to take on Eastern Michigan.
