MUNCIE, Ind. - Playing its third game in five days, Northwestern's field hockey team dropped a hard-fought battle to Ball State, 2-1, Wednesday evening in Muncie, Ind. The Cardinals held off the Wildcat offense the last 23 minutes of the game, dropping NU to 3-4 on the season.
BSU got things started at the 7:22 mark when the Cardinals converted a direct corner for the first score of the game. Northwestern answered 12 minutes later when sophomore Candice Cooper's (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) shot from the left side found the back of the Ball State goal, tying the score at 1-1. Cooper tied freshman Holly Palin (Mequon, Wis./University School of Milwaukee) for the team lead with four goals.
Still tied 10 minutes into the second stanza, Ball State's Allison Haynes fired a one-timer past Wildcat goalkeeper Kelly Augustine (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) in the 47th minute, to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. Augustine had five saves in the game, giving her 20 for the season.
That's all the Cardinals would need, as they outshot the Wildcats 10-7. BSU also had nine penalty corners compared to two for NU.
The 'Cats are back in action Friday in a neutral-site matchup against Saint Louis. The match is set for noon on Ball State's field.
