EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University junior swimmer Erica Rose (Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken School) has added to her long list of open water titles by taking first place at the 10K For the USA Swim in Atlantic City, N.J. last Saturday.

Rose finished the 6.2-mile course in a time of 2:15:28.77 to capture the title by 60 yards over the second-place finisher. She was in line to collect $3,000 as the winner of the race, but was unable to accept the check due to NCAA rules.

"The course (in Atlantic City and Ventnor) was great," Rose told The Press of Atlantic City. "I was with the lead kayak (several kayakers served as course guides) so there was no problem. I wanted to stay with the pack, because I'm not in peak training right now and I wasn't sure how strong I'd be.

"I took the lead for good just before the first bridge (the Dorset Avenue Bridge in Ventnor) on the way back."

Rose is a four-year member of the US Swimming National Team in open water swimming. She was the 1998 world champion and 1999 Pan Pacific champion in 5K open water, and has also won three national championships at 5K and the past two at 10K.

In May, Rose became the first foreigner to win the Wuhan International Yangtze River Speed-Crossing Competition in China.
