Evanston, Ill.-Laurie Schiller has added another chapter to his successes and those of Northwestern athletics after earning a fencing masters from the United States Fencing Coaches' Association (USFCA).
The USFCA is a national academy of the Academie d'Armes Internationale (AAI), the world organization of fencing masters. The diplomas awarded through the USFCA are recognized by the A.A.I. and its member national academies throughout the world.
The fencing master, the highest level of accreditation, requires an exhaustive practical and oral examination, given by a board of USFCA fencing masters, as well as a written thesis.
"It took me a long time to do it, but I'm glad I finally did it," said Schiller who is currently finishing his thesis. "It was nice to prove to myself that I could do it."
"I've learned a lot from a lot of different people. I put what I've learned from many different coaches into my own coaching style."
Schiller's masters is one of his many accomplishments as Northwestern's fencing coach. He has the most career wins, 759, of any NU coach. Schiller was also honored as the USFA National Collegiate Coach of the Year in 1999.
Schiller and the Wildcats open up the 2002-03 season in October.
