EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's swim team figured prominently in the USA Swimming Open Water Women's 10K championship on July 8, as junior Erica Rose placed first and Wildcat teammate Vicky West finished second.

For Rose, it was her fourth national title. In addition, earlier this year she became the first foreigner to win the Wuhan International Yangtze River Speed-Crossing Competition in China.

On a day that began overcast but grew clearer in Newport Beach, Calif., Rose battled the cold Pacific Ocean and mild swells to take the championship with a time of two hours, 11 minutes and 23 seconds. The race for second was amazingly close, as West was able to edge out Beck Kreutzjans by just four seconds. West's time was 2:28:37, while Kreutzjans' time was 2:28:41.
