EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's baseball team dropped its second midweek game of the season, falling 6-5 to Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Panthers scored four runs in the top of the first to hold on for the one-run victory.
After a rough first inning, starting pitcher Dan Pohlman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) settled down and allowed just one hit the final four innings, picking up his second loss of the season. Senior Andy Adams (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) relieved Pohlman, finishing the contest on the mound. Adams allowed two runs, both in the ninth, striking out six in the process. Pohlman also had a RBI in the game from his designated hitter position.
Left fielder Jason Krynski (Niles, Ill./Niles West) made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth, pulverizing a 0-1 offering from reliever Matt Freisleben over the left field wall for his fifth home run of the year. Krynski's blast ties him with junior Brandon Ackley (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) for the team lead in home runs. Krynski finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Starting catcher Pat McMahon also went deep in the game, hitting a line drive solo shot over the left field wall for his first collegiate home run. Junior Ken Padgett (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe), who replaced McMahon in the seventh inning, ended the contest 2-for-2, raising his average to .336.
The loss drops NU to 17-21 overall and 3-2 in midweek games. The 'Cats are next in action when they travel to Iowa City for a crucial four-game conference series with the Hawkeyes. Iowa is just a game back of NU in the race for a spot in the Big Ten Postseason Tournament. The Wildcats are 8-10 while Iowa is 8-11.
