CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Battling cold weather and wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour, Northwestern's baseball team came up a run short in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader in Champaign, Ill. Playing at Illinois' Illinois Field, the Illini overcame a 4-1 Northwestern lead to win 5-4. NU won two of the three games against Illinois over the weekend, improving to 17-20 on the season and 8-10 in conference play.

The Wildcats scored all of its runs in the first three innings, plating a single run in the first, two in the second and one more in the third. Left-handed starter Ryan Bos (Barrington, Ill./Lake Zurich) held Illinois to two hits and two runs in the two and one-third inning he threw, before being relieved.

Sophomore Jason Krynski (Niles, Ill./Niles West) hit his fourth home run of the season, driving a 1-2 curveball over the right field fence for an opposite field homer. Third baseman Steve Haake (Belleville, Ill./Gibault), first baseman Travis Tharp (Boulder,Colo./Boulder) and centerfielder David Gresky (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) all had RBI singles in the game. Catcher Ken Padgett (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) was 2-for-3 with a run scored, raising his average to .324 on the season.

Freshman James Happ (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) came on in relief of Bos, pitching two and two-third innings before classmate and shortstop Jon Mikrut (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) threw the final inning. Happ took the loss, falling to 1-1 in 14 appearances this season.

With the two wins over the weekend, NU is now 8-10 in Big Ten action, moving up to a tie for sixth place with Illinois. The Wildcats own the tiebreaker, putting them in the Big Ten postseason tournament as of today. The top six teams at the end of the regular season schedule make the postseason tournament with the regular season champion hosting the tourney.
