EVANSTON, Ill. - Ending the regular season on a high note, the No. 42 Northwestern men's tennis team defeated No. 63 Penn State 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the Combe Tennis Center. The match was moved indoors due to inclement weather.
The Wildcats finish fourth in the Big Ten Conference standings with a record of 13-8, 6-4 in conference play.
It was a good day for NU's three seniors, playing in their final home match. Jamie Sahara (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph) defeated Todd Stecko 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 singles position, while Joost Hol (Newport Beach, Calif./Foothill) beat Matt Frakes 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot. Ryan Edlefsen (Eden Prairie, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson), who did not play in a singles match for the first time this season, teamed up with Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) for a victory at the No. 3 doubles position.
Despite Edlefsen and Perrin's win, the 'Cats dropped the doubles point. In a lineup switch, Jackie Jenkins (College Park, Ga./Westlake) paired with Hol at the No. 2 doubles spot but fell 8-6. Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and Russell Bennett (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) were also defeated at the No. 1 position.
Hanus lost in singles play to the Big Ten Conference Player of the Week, Jamie Gresh 6-1, 6-1. After Sahara, Hol and Jenkins won their matches, junior Josh Axler (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) clinched the victory for the Wildcats with a 6-0, 7-6(4) victory over Roddy Cantey.
Next up on the schedule for Northwestern is the Big Ten Men's Tennis Tournament, hosted by Ohio State in Columbus April 25-28.
