EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's lacrosse team used solid play during the second half to gain its second win in three days, 10-8, over Duquesne Sunday morning at Lakeside Field.
The Wildcats (4-7) used three straight goals, including two just 19 seconds apart, to break open a tight contest.
Courtney Flynn led a balanced Northwestern attack, scoring three goals for her first hat trick of the season. Angela McMahon had two goals and two assists for a four-point effort, while Donna McCann (2g, 1a) and Sarah Albrecht (1g, 2a) had three points each and Courtney Koester netted two goals.
Duquesne (3-8) wasted no time getting on the board, as Katie Harner took the opening draw and sprinted uncontested for a goal just 11 seconds into the contest. The game soon settled down, as more than five minutes passed before McMahon scored on a feed from Jenna Gantner.
Flynn gave NU a brief lead with the first of her three goals at 7:09, before Duquesne scored three of the next four goals to open up a 4-3 advantage. The Wildcats rattled off three straight tallies in a span of 2:24 to go up 6-4, before the Dukes' Carrie Watkins hit a free-position goal before the half.
Albrecht netted a free-position goal early in the second half for NU, a score that was matched by Kristin Harner's third of the day for Duquesne. However, Koester quick-sticked her second goal of the game on a feed from Albrecht at 41:33, and eight minutes later Flynn and McMahon scored 19 seconds apart to give the 'Cats a 10-6 lead with 10 minutes to play.
Duquesne got a goal from each Harner sister down the stretch, but Northwestern did a good job of possessing offensively to clinch the victory.
Ashley Gersuk had another impressive showing in the Northwestern goal, coming up with nine saves including six in the first half and several on free-position shots. At the other end, Shelley Rank had eight stops for Duquesne.
The Wildcats are off until next weekend, when they travel to Penn State for a pair of games. NU will meet Davidson in a neutral-site American Lacrosse Conference game Saturday at 1 p.m., and on Sunday the 'Cats will take on the nationally ranked Nittany Lions at 11 a.m.
