WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After being rained out Friday afternoon in West Lafayette Ind., Northwestern's baseball team got back to work vs. Purdue. The name of the game was pitching for both teams as Purdue topped the Wildcats 1-0.
Northwestern sent senior left-hander Ryan Bos (Barrington, Ill./Lake Zurich) to the hill, pitting him against Purdue's ace, Chadd Blasko. Bos went five complete innings, giving up just three hits and striking out two. Classmate Zach Schara (Madison, Wis./West) came on in relief of Bos throwing one and one-third innings taking the loss. Schara gave up one run (unearned) in the bottom of the seventh.
With one out in the seventh, Schara walked Purdue's Andy Rempel who advanced to second on an errant pick off throw from catcher Ken Padgett (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe). Brad Kriner hit a ground ball back to Schara who mishandled the throw allowing Krinber to reach first. With one out and runners on first and second, nine-hole hitter Mitch Koester singled to right field driving in Rempel from second.
Offensively, the 'Cats managed just three hits, two of them coming off the bat of first baseman Travis Tharp (Boulder, Colo./Boulder). Padgett had the other Wildcat hit, all three of them were singles.
NU falls to 9-16 overall and 2-6 in the Big Ten. Purdue improves to 14-15, 6-3.
