WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - In Game 2 of Saturday's baseball doubleheader in West Lafayette, Ind., NU and Purdue once again brought quality pitching to the park. Sophomore right-hander Dan Konecny (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) started for NU as the Boilermakers sent sophomore Mitch Pruemer to the rubber.
Purdue jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs on three hits and a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the second inning.
NU got on the board in the fourth inning, scoring a single run. Right fielder Brandon Ackley (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) got things started with an infield single that hit the third base bag and advanced to third on first baseman Travis Tharp's (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) double to the right field corner. Ackley advanced the final 90 feet on a Boilermaker wild pitch, making the score 2-1.
Purdue got the run back in the bottom half of the fourth when Brad Kriner singled and scored on Mitch Koester's double to center.
Sophomore designated hitter Dan Pohlman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) led off the fifth inning with a monstrous home run over the left centerfield wall, making the score 3-2 Purdue.
Konecny, making his fifth start of the season, threw his first complete game of the year giving up three runs while striking out one.
Offensively, Pohlman led the way crushing his second home run and hitting one of three Wildcat doubles. Tharp and freshman shortstop Jon Mikrut (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) also hit doubles in the game.
NU falls to 9-17 overall and 2-7 in the Big Ten while Purdue improves to 15-15, 7-3. NU and Purdue play another doubleheader on Sunday, with Game 1 slated to begin at 1 p.m.
