FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Led by seven points from sophomore Angela McMahon and six from freshman Sarah Albrecht, the Northwestern women's lacrosse team closed out its spring trip with a 13-5 win over Sacred Heart Saturday afternoon.
The win improved the Wildcats to 2-4 overall and snapped a four-game losing streak.
The Wildcats got off to a quick start and never looked back Saturday. Albrecht fed McMahon to get the scoring started 2:31 into the contest, then found the back of the net herself on a free-position effort at the 6:24 mark. Thirteen seconds later, Albrecht again played the role of feeder, this time setting up Jessica Kaplan.
Sacred Heart got one of the goals back in the 12th minute, but NU quickly came right back as McMahon again converted an Albrecht pass. In the final minute of the first half, Courtney Flynn tallied her first of the day for the 'Cats.
Sacred Heart was able to answer that goal just before the final buzzer, though, and then scored 1:12 into the second half to make the score 5-3 in NU's favor. However, the young Wildcats showed excellent composure and ran off the next eight goals to effectively end the contest.
McMahon led the charge with two goals and two assists, while Albrecht had a goal and an assist. Goals were also scored by C. Flynn, Jenna Gantner, Sarah Walsh, Courtney Koester and Erin Flynn.
Ashley Gersuk was again in the goal for NU and had five saves on the day.
The Wildcats returned to Evanston Saturday night, but there is no rest for them. Instead, they will host Virginia Tech Monday morning at 11 a.m., as spring term classes do not begin until Tuesday due to the Easter weekend.
