BALTIMORE, Md. - In this first season back as a varsity program, the Northwestern women's lacrosse team will have to be content every now and then with a portion of their game and not necessarily the final result.

That was the case Tuesday afternoon. After the final horn had sounded at Johns Hopkins' Homewood Field, wrapping up the Bluejays' 11-7 victory over the Wildcats, you could hardly tell the 'Cats had lost.

The excitement among the players and coaches was evident -- and justified. In a game that could have been completely dominated by 16th-ranked Hopkins, the Wildcats showed grit and gained a large measure of respect with their play in the second half.

Coming off a 16-4 loss to No. 20 Ohio State Saturday in the home opener, the Wildcats looked like they might be in for another long day Tuesday in Baltimore.

On a cold, rainy day, Hopkins took the opening faceoff and immediately sprung for a breakaway to score nine seconds in. The score was 5-0 after just 5:07 had passed.

By halftime, the score was 7-0. Truth be told, it could have been worse. The Wildcats took just five shots in the stanza, missing the goal on four of them.

The teams went to their locker rooms to escape the elements at halftime. Whatever NU found in its locker room during the break, the Wildcats should try to bottle for the rest of the season.

Just 59 seconds into the second half, Erin Flynn picked up a rebound and fired home a shot to put the 'Cats on the board. That set the tone for NU's play. Sarah Albrecht managed to find the net two times in the next six minutes, cutting JHU's lead to 7-3.

The rest of the game followed a similar pattern. Whenever the Bluejays scored, NU came right back with an equalizer. For the half, the Wildcats held a 7-4 scoring advantage.

Albrecht added one more goal for a hat trick. Sophomore Angela McMahon had three superb individual efforts en route to three goals.

At the defensive end, Ashley Gersuk finished with 15 saves, seven of them in the second half.

NU will next be in action Thursday, meeting Harvard in a neutral-site game at the University of Maryland. That game will start at 1 p.m. Eastern.
