AUSTIN, Texas - After two days of not sending a single swimmer to the finals of the NCAA Championships, Northwestern's women's swimming team scored team points Saturday night when senior Merritt Adams (Norcross, Ga./The Lovett School) finished 14th in the consolation finals of the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:59.42.
Adams, who won the Big Ten Championship in that event, finished 14th in the 200 fly preliminaries earlier Saturday with a career-best time of 1:58.62.
In other preliminary action, Katie Simmons (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) finished 28th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:16.76, and Susie Sample took 29th in the 200 backstroke with a 2:00.55.
Adams was not the only NU swimmer in the preliminaries of the 200 fly--teammate Rachel Johnson (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) finished 42nd at 2:02.98, and Carmen Cosgrove (Perth, Western Australia/Lumen Christi) was disqualified from the event.
The Wildcats were also disqualified from the 400 freestyle relay for an unknown reason. Sophomore Vicky West (Redlands, Calif./Redlands) competed in the finals of the 1,650 freestyle Saturday night and finished 36th with a time of 17:00.51. That event does not have a preliminary round.
As a team, Northwestern finished 44th with three points.
