EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's longstanding history of success in the sport of fencing will add another chapter this weekend, as four female fencers will represent the Wildcats at the 2002 NCAA Championships.

The event takes place at Drew University in Madison, N.J., March 21-24. Last season, NU finished eighth among women's teams and 14th overall.

This year's qualifiers are Kristen Dorf (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy), Lauren Dunn (Sacramento, Calif./Del Camp), Julia F?ldi (Budapest, Hungary/Szent Istv?n Gimn?zium) and Kate Rudkin (Boulder, Colo./Boulder). Northwestern also landed two fencers among the alternate ranks, Jen Greenebaum (Mendham, N.J./Pingry School) and Kate Frambach (Elm Grove, Wis./Catholic Memorial).

Rudkin, a junior ep?eist, is a two-time All-American who took fourth place at last year's NCAA Championships. She placed second at the Midwest Regionals and has posted a record of 60-12 this season. In addition, she helped the ep?e squad to a first-place finish in the Midwest Collegiate Fencing Conference.

Dorf, a senior foilist, has qualified for the fourth time in four years. Her highest finish at the NCAA competition came in 2001, when she took 13th. Dorf went 5-2 at the conference championships to help the foil squad to a second-place finish.

F?ldi and Dunn, both freshman, qualified after strong performances in the regular season and at the Midwest Regionals. F?ldi, a foilist, started the season with a 25-bout win streak and took sixth at the regionals. She finished second at the individual conference championships. Her record of 66-9 is the best on the team.

Dunn, a saberist, finished fifth at the regionals, garnering a 7-4 record there. Overall, she has a record of 57-16 and is 40-12 against regional opponents.

Frambach, the senior captain of the sabre squad, is an alternate who will compete in the event that a qualifier is unable to. She finished sixth at the Midwest Regionals and seventh in the conference individual championships. Frambach was the 2000 Midwest Regional Sabre Champion and is second on NU's career sabre wins list with 170.

Greenebaum was an NCAA qualifier in 2000 and 2001 but will serve as an ep?e alternate this year. The senior is second on NU's career ep?e wins list and only needs five more victories to claim that title. Greenebaum helped the ep?e squad to a Midwest Fencing Conference Championship this season by notching a perfect 6-0 record during the tournament. She finished seventh at the regionals and eighth at the conference individual championships.

The highest overall finish for Northwestern at the NCAA championships came in 2000, when they took ninth on the combined effort of five qualifiers, including Dorf, Rudkin and Greenebaum. The 'Cats have also placed a fencer in the top five of a weapon in each of the last two years. First-team All-America honorees are those who finish in places one through five, six through ten become second-team All-Americans.
