EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's women's fencing team (26-3) will send four representatives to the NCAA Championships, as announced by the Collegiate Fencing Coaches Association Thursday.
All-America Kate Rudkin (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) will make her third championship appearance in as many years. Last year she finished fourth in ep?e competition. Rudkin finished second last week at the Midwest Regional Championships to secure her spot at the NCAA Championships.
Senior foilist Kristen Dorf (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) also finds herself in a familiar position, having qualified the past three years. Dorf took 13th in 2001, but almost did not qualify for nationals this season after finishing seventh at regionals.
NU's other foil competitor, freshman Julia F?ldi (Budapest, Hungary/Szent Istv?n Gimn?zium), finished sixth at regionals but had an outstanding regular season to solidify her bid to the championships.
Freshman Lauren Dunn (Sacramento, Calif./Del Camp), is the lone Wildcat sabre fencer to qualify. Dunn defended a strong regular season with a solid fifth-place finish at the regional championships.
The national competition is held March 21-24 in Madison, N.J. Operating as a combined championship, the NCAA tallies both the men's and women's scores for each school to determine the team championship. As Northwestern does not field a varsity men's fencing team, it will have two team results: an overall finish and a finish among women's teams.
