BALTIMORE, Md. - The euphoria following the Northwestern women's lacrosse team's win Friday was short-lived, as the Wildcats fell too far behind Richmond Sunday afternoon in a neutral-site game played in Baltimore. The 'Cats outscored the Spiders, 3-2, in the second stanza, but it was not enough to make up for the first half as Richmond won 13-6.
"I thought we came out a little tentative," said NU coach Kelly Amonte Hiller. "We got our stride in the second half, and we came back and outscored them. Hopefully this will be good for us, we've got the jitters out of our system and now we're ready to move forward."
Jenna Gantner led the way for the youthful Wildcats. The freshman scored three goals. Freshman Sarah Albrecht and sophomore Angela McMahon had a goal and an assist apiece, while freshman Erin Flynn also notched a goal. Amonte Hiller was also pleased with the play of Kaitie Lenahan, who along with Albrecht led the team with five ground balls.
Richmond had nice balance at the other end, with five different women scoring two goals apiece. The Spiders outshot Northwestern 24-20 and forced Wildcat goalkeeper Ashley Gersuk to make 11 saves.
Northwestern is now off until Saturday, March 23, when the 'Cats host Ohio State in the first home game back as a varsity program. That game is scheduled to face off at 1 p.m. CST.
