EVANSTON, Ill. - Jeanne Shin, a 2001 University of Michigan graduate, was named to the Northwestern field hockey staff today by head coach Marisa Didio. Shin joins Kelly McCollum as an assistant coach.
"Jeanne has the maturity and ambition to help our program," said Didio. "She is an example of success in our sport that our athletes can look to and connect with immediately."
Shin's primary responsibilities for the Wildcats will include on-the-field player development, assisting in the preparation of opposing team scouting reports and analysis. She also will assist in on-campus recruiting and identification of regional talent.
This is Shin's first coaching opportunity. She was working as a service leader for City Year (AmeriCorps) in Chicago as a program developer for Roosevelt High School. She is currently enrolled in the Northwestern School of Education's graduate program.
As a student-athlete, Shin was a three-year starter and four-year letterwinner for the Wolverines, who were Big Ten regular-season champions in 1997 and 2000. She also helped U-of-M advance to the Final Four in 1999, when the Wolverines finished as the national runner-up. Her team also won Big Ten Tournament titles in 1999 and 2000.
"Jeanne's drive and dedication at Michigan helped build a Big Ten Champion," said Didio. "That's exactly what our kids want to do."
Individually, Shin was named second-team All-Big Ten team and a second-team NFHCA West Region All-American. She also was a three-time NFHCA Academic All-Scholar and was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten recipient. Shin received the Academic-Athletic Achievement Award all four years of college and was named Fox Sport Net's Michigan Student-Athlete of the Week in September of 2000.
