Women's Golf Finishes 11th at Central District Classic

PARRISH, Fla. -- Although the final result fell short of pre-tourney expectations, Northwestern's 17th-ranked women's golf team shot a tourney-best 307 on Tuesday to finish 11th at the Central District Classic at the River Wilderness Country Club. Among the Big Ten schools entered in the tournament, the Wildcats finished sixth.
Michigan State won the tournament with three of its players placing in the top three. Ohio State and Purdue finished in a second-place tie, while Michigan was fourth.
Freshman Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake), ranked 38th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin player rating, led the Wildcats with a 16-over-par 232, good enough for a 38th-place tie. Teammate Lauren Grzebien (Saunderstown, R.I./Narragansett) actually finished in a 15th-place tie (78-72-77=225), but was competing as an individual and not part of the team. Prior to the start of a tournament, a coach must designate its five "team" players should it be allowed to bring a sixth golfer. (Michigan State and Northwestern take turns hosting this tournament each year.)
Senior Emily Gilley (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor), ranked 40th, and sophomore Hana Kim (Encino, Calif./Brentwood), ranked 71st, tied for 43rd place, as did junior Elizabeth Burden (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest). Mary Ellen Grzebien, the younger sister of Lauren, was tied for 58th place.
The Wildcats return to action next week (March 4-5), participating in the "Mo"morial Tournament in Bryan, Texas.
