Women's Tennis Defeats Michigan

EVANSTON, Ill. - The 13th-ranked Northwestern women's tennis team kicked off the 2002 Big Ten season with a 7-0 win over No. 70 Michigan, Saturday afternoon at the Combe Tennis Center. The 'Cats improve to 7-4, 1-0 on the season as Michigan fell to 3-4, 0-1.
Northwestern changed the doubles lineup and it proved to be effective, as they swept doubles for the first point of the match. Seniors Lia Jackson and Simona Petrutiu teamed up at No. 1 to defeat Michelle DaCosta and Leanne Rutherford, 8-3. At No. 2, Marine Piriou and Jessica Rush downed Kim Plaushines and Jen Duprez, 8-4. Ruth Barnes and Stacy Kokx won at No. 3, 8-5.
In singles, Northwestern won four of the six matches in straight sets. Piriou, Jackson, Petrutiu and Yung each defeated their opponents in two sets. At No. 3, Jessica Rush lost the first set, but rebounded in the second to win 6-2, and then won a highly contested third set, 10-8. Barnes had to fight for a win at No. 6, winning the first but dropping the second set to force a third. Barnes pulled out the victory to give NU the sweep.
The Wildcats are next in action on Sunday when they host Michigan State at the Combe Tennis Center. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
