ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Spurred by designated hitter Travis Tharp's (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) three-run home run in the first inning, the Northwestern baseball team avenged Friday's loss at New Mexico with a 10-8 victory Saturday.
Tharp's first home run of the season traveled an estimated 435 feet, but was just one of NU's 15 hits in the game. Senior Steve Haake (Belleville, Ill./Gibault) and junior Ken Padgett (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) each went 3-for-5.
Starting pitcher Zach Schara (Madison, Wis./West) picked up his first win of the season, throwing 101 pitches in six innings of work. Closer Dan Pohlman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) earned his first save of the season. In the interim, Dan Konecny (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) and James Happ (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) both took to the mound and had solid relief performances.
Freshman Stanley Finch (Lubbock, Texas/Cooper) made his first collegiate start in the outfield, playing solid defense and notching a pair of hits.
The Wildcats are now 2-4 on the season and wrap up the three-game series with the Lobos Sunday at 11 a.m. MST in Albuquerque. Senior Gabe Ribas (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) is set to take the mound for the 'Cats.
