ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Northwestern's baseball team (1-5) pounded out 10 hits but left eight runners on base, falling to the University of New Mexico, 13-4. Senior Steve Haake's (Libertyville, Ill./Gibault) ninth-inning three-run home run was to little too late, as the Lobos exploded for four runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to seal the victory.
After a first inning New Mexico run, NU tied the game at 1-1 when Frank Favia's (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) fielders choice scored David Gresky (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) from third. Gresky led off the inning with a single to center which was quickly followed by Dan Pohlman's (Barrington, Ill./ Barrington) single to right, advancing Gresky to third.
Senior left-hander Ryan Bos (Barrington, Ill./Lake Zurich) was pitted against last week's Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, James Vermilyea. The Lobo sophomore keyed New Mexico's success, pitching eight innings, allowing one run and scattering seven hits.
Bos threw five and one-third innings, giving up two earned runs (five total) and walking two. The loss drops him to 0-2 on the season.
At the plate, Haake's home run was the only Wildcat extra base hit in the game. Gresky led NU with two hits. Catcher Pat McMahon (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel) quickly picked up his first collegiate hit, stroking a single up the middle in his first college at bat.
The teams continue their three-game series Saturday afternoon at Lobo Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. (MST)
