PHOENIX, Ariz. - Junior Ken Padgett's (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) solo shot and sophomore David Gresky's (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) three-run, inside-the-park home run lifted Northwestern's baseball team past the Portland Pilots, 7-6. NU had lost to Portland in their season opener, 5-1.
The Pilots jumped out to an early 5-1 lead, scoring four runs off Wildcat starter Dan Konecny (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) in the second inning. Konecny gave up six runs-four earned-on seven hits in four innings of work.
Freshmen Evan Blesoff (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) and James Happ (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) relieved Konecny, combining for five innings of hitless baseball. Portland managed just three baserunners after the fourth inning. Blesoff threw three complete innings, striking out three. Happ recorded his first save, throwing the final two innings.
Offensively, NU managed seven hits in the game, three of which went for extra bases. Along with Gresky and Padgett's home runs, sophomore Dan Pohlman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) stroked his first triple of the season, driving in two runs.
Sophomore Josh Lieberman (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) started his first game of the year and was the only Wildcat to have two hits.
