PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Northwestern baseball team battled back from a 7-2 deficit before falling 8-7 to the University of Washington Friday afternoon in Phoenix, Ariz. A five run, seventh inning by Northwestern came up short as the Wildcats start the 2002 campaign 0-2.
In the seventh, four base-on-balls, two wild pitches and a hit batter led to the Wildcats' five runs. Senior Steve Haake's (Belleville, Ill./Gibault) two-run double was the big hit of the inning.
Senior right-hander Gabe Ribas (Brunswick, Maine./Brunswick) started on the mound for Northwestern throwing five and two-thirds innings, giving up seven runs, six of which were earned. Freshman Stanley Finch (Lubbock, Texas/Cooper) relieved Ribas and threw one and one-third innings of scoreless baseball. Fellow newcomer, Evan Blesoff (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest), threw the Husky eighth, giving up what turned out to be the winning run.
NU is next in action tomorrow when they square off against Washington at 10 a.m.
