Baseball Falls to Portland, 5-1, in Season Opener

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Ken Padgett (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) went 2-for-4 with an RBI double as the Northwestern baseball team opened the 2002 campaign with a 5-1 loss to Portland in Phoenix, Ariz.
Senior right-hander Zach Schara (Madison, Wis./West) got the starting nod on the mound, throwing seven complete innings and giving up four runs, three of which were earned. Schara struck out three.
The Pilots jumped on NU early, scoring two runs in the first inning, and outhit the Wildcats 12-9 for the game.
Freshman James Happ (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) saw his first collegiate action, throwing one inning of no-hit baseball. Senior Andy Adams (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) and sophomore Dan Konecny (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) also saw action on the mound.
Junior Eric Roeder (Onsted, Mich./Onsted) had two hits while five other Wildcats reached base safely.
