Box Score

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's field hockey team ended its regular season with a 3-0 shutout of Colgate at Lakeside Field Sunday afternoon. It was the second straight shutout for NU (6-12).

The Wildcats came to play right out of the box, outshooting CU 13-1 in the first half and 22-7 for the game. The second half was more of a back and forth battle with the Wildcat defense stepping up and recording its second shutout in a row.

On Northwestern's senior day, Michelle Cifelli (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex), played in her final home game and got the scoring started, taking a Candice Cooper (Winnetka, Ill./ New Trier) pass and firing it past the Colgate (6-11) goalkeeper. Cooper would get in the scoring act two minutes later when she converted one of Northwestern's 12 penalty corners. It was Cooper's eighth goal of the year, a team high.

Following the lead of Cifelli, her senior classmate, Cifelli, Lindsey Millard (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute Country Day) found herself in front of a wide-open net, accepting a pass from freshman Holly Palin (Mequon, Wis./University School of Milwaukee) and depositing in the Colgate net. Millard has four goals on four shots this season.

In her last regular-season match between the sticks, Northwestern goalkeeper Kendra Mesa (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) recorded her second straight shutout, stopping a flurry of Colgate opportunities midway through the second half. Mesa tallied four saves, all in the second half.

With the close of the regular season, NU gets ready for the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament next weekend in Columbus, Ohio. The Wildcats are the sixth seed after defeating Indiana (1-0) on Friday. NU is pitted against third-seed Penn State, a team NU lost to 1-0 in overtime in Evanston.

Game time is set for Friday November 8, at 2 p.m. on OSU's North Turf Field.
