EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern head coach Laurie Schiller announced the early-period signing of two fencers for 2003-04. Courtney DuBois (Chatham, N.J./Oak Knoll), an ep?eist, and Jessica Florendo (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Dwight School), a foilist, have committed to fence for the 'Cats.

Florendo recently won the under-19 foil championship at the USFA Summer National Championships. In 2001-02, she earned a berth on the under-17 (cadet) national team. Florendo was ranked as high as fourth in the under-19 division and was an alternate on the U.S. Junior Women's Foil team. Florendo, who holds an "A" rating, is currently ranked in the top eight in the junior and senior divisions in the U.S.

DuBois garnered Newark Star Ledger second-team all-state honors during her prep fencing career. She earned first-team honors from the coaches. DuBois finished third at the Reno North American Cup while competing in Division II and led her high school to first place in New Jersey.

"Jessica is one of the top-ranked foilists," Schiller said. "Courtney is one of the best fencers in New Jersey. Clearly, they will both make us stronger. We are happy to have them."
