EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern head coach Laurie Schiller said he expected a strong sabre squad this season and that is what he got Saturday at the NU Duals. The sabreists outscored their opponents 36-2 and the Wildcats swept their opponents for a 4-0 start in dual competition.
NU's biggest win of the day, a 25-2 margin, came against the University of Chicago. The 'Cats sabre team won 9-0, and the foil and ep?e squads picked up 8-1 wins. The sabreists also outscored Purdue's sabreists 9-0, as the 'Cats knocked off the Boilermakers 21-6. Lauren Dunn (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) finished the day with an 11-0 record.
Kelsey Nencheck (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) ran the table in ep?e competition, winning all 11 bouts in which she participated.
Freshmen Christina Wang (Milpitas, Calif./Castilleja) and Sharon Sullivan (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) had strong showings. Sullivan won 10 of her 11 ep?e bouts and Wang won nine of her 10 foil bouts.
Northwestern also defeated Case Western Reserve 22-5 and Minnesota 21-6.
The 'Cats return to action Sunday, Nov. 17 when they host the Illinois Junior Olympics. Competition begins at 9 a.m. at Patten Gymnasium.
