STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Northwestern kept Michigan on its heels through much of the second half, but the Wildcats could not overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit and dropped their first-round game of the Big Ten Tournament, 1-0. With the loss, the Wildcats ended their season with an 8-12 record.
After being outshot 6-3 in the first frame, NU responded in the second as it maintained ball possession for the majority of the half. During the period, the 'Cats had seven shots to the Wolverines' six.
Northwestern's eight wins this season were the third most in school history.
"We've had a lot of ups and downs," said senior Paul Elkins (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South). "But to finish our career on a high note, with the way this season has gone, is great. To do this well this season is the best accomplishment of my life."
Michigan's Mike White netted the game-winning goal at the 25:07 mark. Adam Bruh sent a free kick to White, who headed it past NU goalkeeper J.D. Martin (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick). Martin stopped six Wolverine shots on the day and knocked away other numerous scoring chances.
"It really hasn't sunk in yet," said Elkins of his final game at NU. "The guys I have spent four years with have grown so close. I think the guys coming up have a lot of ability and the sky's the limit for them."
