EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's lacrosse team enjoyed a successful fall campaign, hosting a Playday at Lakeside Field on October 6 and then taking on the University of Massachusetts five days later.

The Wildcats were also supposed to go to the George Mason Fall Invitational October 19-20, but stayed home due to the series of sniper shootings in that area of the country. Instead, the team will take part in the South of the Border Preseason Tournament that is hosted in February by North Carolina and Duke.

"I think the fall has been a great time for our new freshman to get experience, and our veterans have done a great job of carrying the confidence they gained last year into this fall season," said head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller. "The difference in play is very noticeable."

On October 6, Northwestern played two shortened games apiece against Ohio State and Notre Dame. The Wildcats defeated the Buckeyes, 7-6 and 6-3, and split with the Fighting Irish (W 8-7, L 4-3).

Five days later, the Wildcats took on the University of Massachusetts in a game at Lakeside Field and emerged with a 16-4 victory.

"Having success against Notre Dame and OSU -- a pair of NCAA Tournament teams last year -- has only enhanced the level of confidence on the team," said Amonte Hiller. "Overall, I am very pleased with the fall so far, and I hope we can continue to grow and learn as we prepare for our sophomore spring season."
