ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Northwestern's field hockey team dropped a 1-0 thriller to defending national champion Michigan at Phyllis Ocker Field in Ann Arbor, Mich. It was Michigan's (14-1, 5-0 Big Ten) 13th-straight win and assured them a share of the Big Ten regular-season title. Northwestern falls to 4-11 overall, 0-4 in the Big Ten.
Northwesterns defense was stingy during the entire game, limiting the Wolverines to 13 shots, including six in the first half. Michigan kept the Wildcats at bay as well, allowing only five scoring chances during a game that was spent between the 25-yard lines.
"We were in the entire game," said head coach Marisa Didio. "We did a good job of controlling a lot of Michigan's strengths. We challenged a very powerful team today and took big strides in the development of our program."
After a scoreless first half, the Wolverines got on the board 5:29 into the second stanza when junior forward April Fronzoni beat NU senior goalkeeper Kendra Mesa (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) for the game-winning tally. Mesa had four saves in the game.
Sophomore Candice Cooper (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) recorded four shots in the game while senior Diane Provencher (North Conway, N.H./Kennett) tallied one.
NU is back in action next weekend, hosting sixth-ranked Michigan State on Saturday. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
