Central Michigan Shuts Out NU, 3-0

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Northwestern's field hockey record fell to 4-10 on the year, losing to No. 20 Central Michigan 3-0 in Mount Pleasant, Mich. Coming off its first top-20 ranking of the year, CMU blanked the Wildcats, scoring two second-half goals to seal the victory.
The Chippewa's got on the board 16 minutes into the game when Allison Goland scored her second goal of the year, unassisted. Central would add goals at the 47:00 and 61:50 minutes marks, both in the second half.
Senior Michelle Cifelli (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) and sophomore Candice Cooper (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) each recorded a shot on goal with Cifelli's counting as a shot on goal.
Central Michigan's offense was too much as the Chippewa's recorded 12 penalty corners to NU's three. CMU also outshot the Wildcats 7-2.
Senior Kendra Mesa (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) recorded two saves in the game as both teams replaced goalies with 6:07 remaining in the game. Freshman Kelly Augustine (Northampton, N.H./Northampton) was inserted into the Wildcat net, seeing her first action since Sept. 29 at Iowa.
The 'Cats are next in action when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., to take on second-ranked and 2001 National Champion Michigan. Game time is set for noon at Phyllis Ocker Field.
