ATHENS, Ohio - Northwestern's field hockey team extended its losing streak to five games, falling to Ohio University 1-0 at Pruitt Field in Athens, Ohio. The Bobcats converted a first-half penalty corner for the only score of the game.
It was a back-and-forth battle as each team tallied two shots in the first half. Ohio held a 3-1 advantage in penalty corners, scoring its goal with 19:53 left in the first stanza.
The second half was much of the same, with neither team taking advantage of its scoring opportunities.
Senior Kendra Mesa (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) made her fourth straight start at goalkeeper, saving three shots.
Sophomore Candice Cooper (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) led the 'Cats with two shots on goal. Seniors Michelle Cifelli (Fairfield, N.J. West Essex), Diane Provencher (North Conway, N.H./Kennett) and Juli Fomenko (Campbell, Calif./Los Gatos) each had one shot in the game.
Cifelli's shot came with just over 14 minutes left in the second period as Bobcat goalkeeper, Ashley Pitkin, made a spectacular diving stop in front of a wide open goal to preserve the lead.
The Wildcats are next in action when they travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich., to take on Central Michigan, Friday October 18 at 1 p.m. The 'Cats take on second-ranked Michigan two days later in Ann Arbor.
