EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's fencing team will get its first test of the 2002-03 season this weekend as it hosts the USFA Burton and the Big Ten Club Championships. The USFA Burton is slated for Saturday, and the Big Ten Club Championships are set for Sunday. Both events begin around 9 a.m. at Patten Gymasium. No team points will be kept.

The sophomore trio of Julia F?ldi (Budapest, Hungary/Szent Istavan Gimnazium), Lauren Dunn (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) and Lauren Van Gieson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) are the top returnees for NU. F?ldi is coming off of a freshman campaign in which she posted an 82-16 foil record. She began the 2001-02 season with 25 straight wins en route to a second-team All-America selection.

Dunn also earned second-team All-America honors for her 72-24 sabre record. Van Gieson, also a sabreist, went 50-14 (a team-best .781 winning percentage in sabre) before tearing her ACL a week before the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships.

Freshman Sharon Sullivan (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) could see significant time with the NU ep?e squad. Sullivan has been a regular in the top 20 of the U.S. Fencing junior rankings and she finished 15th at the Junior World Cup in September.

Saturday's USFA Burton is an open event for male and female competitors. Purdue, Penn State and Minnesota are scheduled to make the trip for Sunday's club championships.
