Rachel Evjen Wins Bradley Open

Sept. 7, 2001
PEORIA, Ill. - Junior Rachel Evjen (Eau Claire, Wis./North), who led Northwestern in every race last year and was the first NU runner to compete at the NCAA Championships since the program was revived in 1998, is back. And she might be better than ever.
Evjen again led the way for Northwestern Friday night at the Bradley Open -- in fact, she led all runners across the finish line. The junior clocked 17:41 on the 5-kilometer course at Detweiller Park in Peoria, as the Northwestern women's cross country team finished second out of 10 teams. The Wildcats scored 39 points and were beaten only by No. 23 Marquette, which had 29 points. Those two teams dominated the field -- third-place Bradley had 122 points.
Evjen defeated Susan Barth of Marquette by five seconds in gaining the victory. That allowed Evjen to gain a measure of revenge on Barth, who bested her by four seconds in this race last year. However, Marquette gained the win by having four of the first seven runners across the line.
Northwestern's next runner to finish was Diana Hossfeld (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar), who clocked 18:26 to finish in eighth place overall. Karen Rogers (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood) was right on her heels, finishing ninth in 18:30. The two other scorers for Northwestern were Nicole Kuznia (Olivia, Minn./BOLD) and Sara Jurek (Tulsa, Okla./Cascia Hall). Kuznia finished 12th in 18:44, while Jurek was 13th in 18:46.
Northwestern will next compete at Illinois State on Saturday, Sept. 15.
