CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Northwestern women's cross country team finished sixth at the Big Ten Championships Sunday morning in Savoy, Ill. The 5-kilometer race was run on the University of Illinois' Orange and Blue Course.

The Wildcats scored 137 points in a race that saw a changing of the guard in the Big Ten hierarchy. After six years as the women's team champion, Wisconsin was dethroned by sixth-ranked Michigan State. The Spartans placed all of their scorers in the race's Top 14 en route to a sound victory. MSU's 35 points easily outdistanced second-place Michigan, which had 101. Wisconsin was third with 106 points.

Minnesota (112) and Purdue (116) were the other teams ahead of Northwestern. The Wildcats had a 16-point margin over Illinois and Penn State, who tied for seventh place with 153 points.

Junior Rachel Evjen (Eau Claire, Wis./North) was NU's top runner again Sunday, and became the first Wildcat runner ever to earn first team All-Big Ten. She clocked 17:23.7 to gain fifth place overall.

Freshman Diana Hossfeld (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) earned second team All-Big Ten, taking 11th place overall in 17:45.7. Northwestern's other scorers Sunday were junior Karen Rogers (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood), who was 25th in 18:04.1, junior Nicole Kuznia (Olivia, Minn./BOLD), 38th in 18:16.3, and senior Sara Jurek (Tulsa, Okla./Cascia Hall), 58th in 18:47.5.

NU's other runners were Nora Colligan (Rockford, Mich./Rockford), 62 points in 19:00.0, Nicole Kalogeropoulos (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd), 68 points in 19:18.0, Jennifer Anderson, 86th in 19:44.6, and Kyna Forkins, 87th in 19:48.8.

Northwestern again ran without Laura Evans and Emily Blakeslee, both of whom have been injured all season. Evans was a second team All-Big Ten runner last year, while Blakeslee was one of NU's most consistent scorers as a freshman.

Northwestern will next be in action on Saturday, Nov. 10, running at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in Carbondale, Ill.
