Evanston, Ill. - For the second time in as many home games, the Northwestern men's soccer (0-2-2) team came back from behind in the second half to earn a draw against their opponent. In the home opener it was Loyola, this Friday the Drake Bulldogs (2-0-1) were the team on the other end. Northwestern battled the Bulldogs for 120 minutes to earn a 1-1 tie.
A misplay in front of their own goal in the first half gave Drake's Matt Nickell an open shot from 7 yards out, and that put the Bulldogs up by one right before the half. Drake outshot NU in the first half 7-2, but came away with only a 1-0 lead.
In the second half of play, the 'Cats battled even with the Bulldogs, matching their seven shots with seven of their own. In the 56th minute of play, senior Grant Trimble (Olathe, Kan./North) found sophomore Michael Trudell (Wayzata, Minn./Orono) at midfield. Trudell broke away from the pack to score his first goal of the season. The effort tied the game at one apiece.
The contest would carry on for almost seventy more minutes with neither team able to take home a win. In the extra stanza, NU goalie Ryan Pederson (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) made three saves to preserve the tie.
Wildcat head coach Tim Lenahan said after the game that he was pleased with his team's effort in the double overtime tie.
"We battled and competed for all 120 minutes out there today," remarked Lenahan. "First we learn to compete, than we will learn to win."
