EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's soccer team fell to Illinois-Chicago in a hard-fought battle Thursday at Lakeside Field. With the loss the Wildcats drop to 0-5-2, while the Flames, winning their fourth straight, improve to 4-3-0.
UIC took a 1-0 lead into the half after Patrick Grange converted a Micah Howser cross in the 21st minute.
Not ready to surrender, NU came out of the break with renewed fire and a sense of purpose. The 'Cats rattled off six shots in the first 12 minutes of the second half, and outshot the Flames 8-4 in the period.
The hard work finally paid off when Daniel Doman (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Detroit Country Day) made a sliding attack on the net, tapping an Andrew Wade (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown) pass into the goal in the 73rd minute. The goal was Doman's second of the year, and provided Wade with his first collegiate point.
The two teams battled evenly, until Jay DeMerit found Jake Stasko in front of the NU defense late in the second half. Stasko went into the goal alone, firing a shot past Wildcat goalie Ryan Pederson (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North). That goal would give UIC the lead for good.
The 'Cats return to conference action this Sunday, when they host Michigan State at 2 p.m. at Lakeside Field.
