EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern field hockey team dropped a heartbreaker to the Cardinals of Ball State, 1-0, at Lakeside Field Sunday afternoon. BSU's Monika Rhode scored 5:05 into the first overtime, dropping NU to 1-3 on the season.
The Wildcats outshot the Cardinals 9-6 but failed to find the back of the net against BSU's Susan McDowell. McDowell recorded nine saves while Northwestern goalie, Kendra Mesa (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand), stopped five in the loss.
Both teams had scoring opportunities throughout the game as NU recorded seven penalty corners compared to five for Ball State. Diane Provencher (North Conway, N.H./Kennett) and Juli Fomenko (Campbell, Calif./Los Gatos) led the 'Cats with two shots on goal apiece.
NU is back in action Sept. 7, when it travels to Maryland to take on the Terrapins at the Maryland Invitational.
