Field Hockey Signs Four to Letters of Intent

EVANSTON, ILL. - Head coach Marisa Didio has signed the following four high school seniors to National Letters of Intent to play field hockey at Northwestern beginning in the fall of 2001:

Abby Alley (forward, Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest)
Candice Cooper (midfield, Winnetka, Ill./New Trier)
Morgan Kuhn (back/midfield, Chesterfield, Mo./Lafayette)
Barrie Shapiro (back, Dedham, Mass./Middlesex School)

"The women in this year's class were all multi-sport athletes in high school, and they have the talent, athleticism and chemistry to compete at this level." said Didio. "The athletic talents of these girls will enhance our program and help us take a step in the right direction."

Abby Alley / Forward
Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest

High School: Captain of field hockey team, leading Lake Forest to a state championship her senior year ... Scored 12 goals and tallied 16 assists senior year, including an assist on the goal to win the state championship ... Led team in scoring with 14 goals, 21 assists her junior year ... Received All-State and All-Academic honors ... Member of Junior Olympic team in 1999 and USA Futures Elite team in 2001 ... Also captain of high school lacrosse team, leading the team in scoring and being named Most Valuable Player three straight years ... Two time all-state lacrosse player and Honorable Mention All-American in 2000... Member of National Honor Society, Student Council, and Honor Roll.
Personal: Born Abby Jensen Alley on 7/19/83 ... Daughter of Joanie and Steve Alley ... Enrolled in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences ... Played alongside current Wildcats Katie Fischer and Katie Hall ... Father played ice hockey at the University of Wisconsin, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime to win the NCAA Championship ... Mother won an Illinois State Curling Championship.

High School: Captain and Most Valuable Player of field hockey team her senior year, leading New Trier torunner-up finish in the state ... Tallied 48 goals and 24 assists over high school career ... Led team in scoring sophomore, junior, and senior years ... Two-time All-State honoree ... Four year starter, member of statechampionship team her freshman and sophomore years ... High school team was 75-13-9 over her fouryears ... Participated in USFHA Regional Futures program the past four years ... Four-year Honor Roll studentand named Scholar Athlete in 2000 ... Also four-year starter for high school softball team, named all-conference in 2000 ... Two-year member of women's ice hockey team ... Hockey team won state championship her junior year ... Served as captain and was an All-Star game participant senior year.

High School: A four-year letterwinner in field hockey, she led the Midwest Region in scoring with 34 goals (seven game-winners) and 23 assists as a senior ... Named regional All-American, All-State, St. Louis Post-Dispatch Player of the Year, Chicago Tribune First Team, Team MVP ... Team finished 21-4-1 ... Recorded 14 foals and 18 assists as a junior and was first-team All-Conference ... Also earned three letters in basketball, two in lacrosse and one in soccer ... Four-time Scholar Athlete and Honor Roll, three-time Spanish Honor Society member and member of National Honor Society as a junior and senior.

Two-time All-League honoree ... Attended National Hockey Festival in 2000 ... Excelled in softball receiving four varsity letters, serving as captain three years, and named All-League twice ... Four year member of Alpine Skiing Team that won three Independent School League championships and one New England Prep School Athletic Council Class B championship ... Captain of ski team her senior year ... All-League and All-New England the past three years ... Two-time member of New Hampshire Junior Olympic Ski Team ... Named Outstanding Female Athlete of sophomore and junior class.
