EVANSTON, Ill. - The 10th-ranked Northwestern women's tennis team flexed its muscles Sunday morning, defeating No. 28 Iowa, 7-0, in Iowa City. The Wildcats swept all three doubles matches en route to the first point of the day, then won five of the six singles matches in straight sets to close out the victory.
The Wildcats are now 15-4 overall, and 6-0 in the Big Ten. Iowa fell to 8-8 (2-4 Big Ten).
After winning the doubles point, Northwestern set the tone in the singles as all of the top four players -- Colleen Cheng, Lia Jackson, Marine Piriou and Simona Petrutiu -- won their first set 6-0. All four won in straight sets, losing just seven games combined. Jessica Rush was also a straight-set winner, including 6-0 in the second set. Ruth Barnes was the only player extended to three sets, as she came back to win after dropping the first set in her match at No. 6.
Northwestern is on the road again next weekend, taking on Minnesota Friday evening (6:30 p.m.) and Wisconsin Sunday morning (11 a.m.).
