Baseball Wins Game 1, 3-1, Over Hawkeyes

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern baseball team followed the arm of senior pitcher Michael Nall (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) to a 3-1 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader. Nall went the distance (seven innings), giving up one run and scattering four hits. He struck out six and walked none in his fourth complete game of the season. Nall is second on the team in K's with 73 in 79.2 innings.
The Wildcats scored all three runs in the third inning as sophomore Ken Padgett (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) singled to start the inning. After Padgett stole second, center fielder Steve Haake (Belleville, Ill./Gibault) extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a two-out RBI single to right field. Designated hitter Todd Morgan (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) followed with a bunt single bringing up catcher Joe Hietpas (Appleton, Wis./North). Hietpas quickly singled to right, scoring both Haake and Morgan.
Iowa got on the board in the fourth when Ian Mattiace doubled to center field and advanced to third on a fly out to right. Designated hitter Alex Dvorsky singled to left scoring Mattiace from third.
Offensively for NU, Haake went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Hietpas went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Left fielder David Gresky (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius), Morgan, and right fielder Dan Pohlman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) all went 1-for-3 in the game. Padgett ended the game 1-for-2 with a run scored.
