EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern baseball team didn't need extra innings in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader, but they waited as long as they could, winning 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning on a suicide squeeze. Sophomore Eric Roeder (Onsted, Mich./Onsted) laid down the bunt, scoring pinch runner Andy Adams (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) for the 3-2 win.
Both teams were scoreless until the sixth inning, when junior Steve Haake (Belleville, Ill./Gibault) led off with his 10th double of the year and advanced to third on a flyout to center. Sophomore Travis Tharp (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) then singled to right scoring Haake, giving the Wildcats the 1-0 lead heading into the final inning.
IU capitalized in their half of the seventh, though, using a hit batsman and a walk to score two runs and take a 2-1 lead into the bottom half of the last inning.
Haake hit a crucial one-out single, scoring a run and setting up Roeder's heroics. Haake was 2-for-4 in the game with one RBI and a run scored. Senior Wesley Robinson (Bradenton, Fla./St. Stephen's) went 1-for-3, as IU pitcher Nick Otte held the Northwestern offense to just four hits for the game.
Junior Gabe Ribas (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) went the distance for NU, scattering eight hits and allowing one earned run while striking out seven. In pitching his second complete game of 2001, Ribas improved his record to 2-6.
