Baseball Defeats Harvard, 5-1

BRADENTON, Fla. - The Northwestern baseball team defeated Harvard University, 5-1, Saturday afternoon in Bradenton, Fla. This is the third win over Harvard this week. NU improved its overall record to 10-11.
Junior pitcher Zach Schara (Madison, Wis./West) pitched seven-plus innings, picking up his third win of the season before giving way to sophomore Christopher Spiering (Schaumburg, Ill./Conant). Schara struck out ten, walking none and lowered his ERA to 2.66. He also leads the team in strikeouts with 42. Spiering, along with juniors Andy Adams (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) and Ryan Bos (Barrington, Ill./ Prospect) threw the final two innings with Bos picking up his first save of 2001.
Senior catcher Joe Hietpas (Appleton Wis./North) and sophomore Brandon Ackley (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) led the `Cats at the plate, each hitting safely twice in four chances. Junior transfer Steve Haake (Belleville, Ill.Gibault) was 2-for-3 belting a double and triple in the contest. Shortstop Eric Roeder (Onsted, Mich./Onsted) and freshman David Gresky (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) each had a hit.
NU scored a pair of runs in the fifth and seventh innings, adding an insurance run in the eighth. In the fifth inning, junior Todd Morgan (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) led off with a triple to right center. With one out, freshman Dan Pohlman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) singled to center driving in Morgan. With two outs and nobody on, Ackley singled to right bringing up Haake. Haake tripled scoring Ackley from first giving NU the 2-0 lead.
In the seventh inning Hietpas got the ball rolling with a one out single to left center and stealing second. With two outs, Ackley singled to left scoring Hietpas. After a pitching change, Haake stepped up and ripped a double to left center advancing Ackley to third. Roeder put the ball in play and it was mishandled by the shortstop allowing Ackley to score.
Travis Tharp (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) started the eighth with a single to right. With one out and Tharp on second, Hietpas singled to right center scoring NU's fifth and final run.
