BRADENTON, Fla. - The Northwestern baseball team fell to the University of Vermont, 12-11, in a game that was continued from March 20. The Wildcats and Catamounts began the game last Tuesday and were in the eighth inning when the lights went dark. The teams discovered that the fields lights were on a timer set by the county and rescheduled the contest for today.
Junior Gabe Ribas (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) started on the mound for NU and went five complete innings, giving up five runs on six hits, striking out seven and walking two. Sophomore Christopher Spiering (Schaumburg, Ill./Conant) threw the next two innings allowing three runs on six hits.
That's when the lights went out.
Junior Andy Adams (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) restarted the eighth -- now playing on March 23 -- and ended up throwing the eighth, ninth and one out in the 10th. Adams walked none, striking out four, but took the loss as he gave up a game-winning home run in the 10th, dropping his record to 0-1.
Offensively, NU showed signs of becoming the team they expected to be at the beginning of the year smacking 15 hits. Six Wildcats had multiple hits, with sophomore Brandon Ackley (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) leading the way. He went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs. Shortstop Frank Favia (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) went 2-for-5 with three RBI, and catcher Ken Padgett (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) was 3-for-6.
