TAMPA, Fla. - The Northwestern baseball team fell to the South Florida Bulls, 7-2, Wednesday evening in Tampa, Fla. USF got off to a quick start with three runs in the first, then added three more in the six and one in the eighth. Five Bulls pitchers held NU to nine hits at Red McEwen Field. The loss drops NU below .500, at 8-9, while South Florida improved to 11-14.

Junior lefthander Ryan Bos (Barrington, Ill./Lake Zurich) started the game on the mound for Northwestern, surrendering six runs on 10 hits in 5.2 innings of work. Bos fell to 1-1 on the season. Sophomore Christopher Spiering (Schaumburg, Ill./Conant) came on in relief of Bos and induced a flyout to center which ended the three-run sixth inning for the Bulls. J.J. Standring (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) threw the final two innings, giving up one run on four hits and striking out two.

Offensively, NU scored single runs in the fourth and seventh innings. In the fourth, senior catcher Joe Hietpas (Appleton, Wis./North) singled to center to start the inning and Ken Padgett (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) executed a sacrifice bunt that advanced Hietpas to second. Junior Todd Morgan (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) flied out to right field, advancing Hietpas to third, and then sophomore Brandon Ackley (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) singled to center to score Hietpas.

In the seventh, freshman Dan Pohlman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) led off the inning with a walk. One out later, junior Steve Haake (Belleville, Ill./Gibault) slapped his second double of the year, driving home Pohlman from first to score NU's second run.

Sophomore second baseman Eric Roeder (Onsted, Mich./Onsted) led NU at the plate, going 2-for-4. NU left eight runners on base for the game.
