BRADENTON, Fla. - The Northwestern baseball team fell to the University of Vermont, 10-2, at McKechnie Field in a seven-inning contest. For the second straight game NU fell behind the eight-ball early, as UVM plated two runs in the top of the first. The Catamounts didn't stop there, scoring runs in four separate innings and mounting the crushing blow with a five-run seventh inning. NU made two of its four costly errors in that inning, allowing four unearned runs.
The Northwestern offense sputtered in the fourth game of an eight-game road trip in Bradenton, Fla. The `Cats managed seven hits off two Catamount pitchers and scored single runs in the third and sixth innings. In the third, left fielder Dan Pohlman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) led off with a single to right and advanced to third on two groundouts. The UVM third baseman couldn't handle an Eric Roeder (Onsted, Mich./ Onsted) grounder, and Pohlman scored NU's first run.
In the sixth inning, freshman David Gresky (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) started things off with a double to left field. With two outs and runners on first and third, Matt Thompson (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) singled to right center to score Gresky. It was Thompson's fourth RBI of the season.
Freshman Dan Konecny (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) started the game on the mound for the Wildcats and threw 3.2 innings before giving way to sophomore Christopher Spiering (Schaumburg, Ill./Conant) and freshman Jason Krynski (Niles, Ill./Niles West). Konecny was touched for five runs on seven hits, striking out two and walking four. For the second straight game, Spiering came in to end a rally and succeeded. He faced one hitter in the top of the fourth and got him to fly out to right. Krynski threw the final three innings, allowing five runs (one earned) on five hits. He struck out three and walked one.
Gresky led the NU offense, going 2-of-3 to up his batting average to .309. Five other Wildcats hit safely in the game.
