Baseball Team Falls to McNeese State, 12-2

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern baseball team fell to McNeese State in the first round of the McNeese State Tournament. The Cowboys used an eight-run seventh inning to put the game out of reach for NU.
Northwestern falls to 5-4 overall while McNeese improved to 7-5 on the year.
Offensively, catcher Joe Hietpas smacked his first two doubles of the season and went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Senior Wesley Robinson stroked his third double of the season, going 2-for-3 with one RBI. The team's leading hitter at 10-for-20, junior Matt Thompson was 2-for-4 while freshman Jason Krynski, sophomore Ken Padgett and freshman Dan Pohlman all recorded one hit for the Wildcats.
Junior Zach Schara started on the mound for Northwestern, throwing six and one-third innings and giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits. He walked five and struck out nine before giving way to senior J.J. Standring, who went just one-third of an inning and gave up three runs on three hits while striking out one.
Freshman Cody Conway made his collegiate debut on the mound but failed to record an out after giving up two runs on one hit and one walk in Northwestern's disastrous seventh. Sophomore Christopher Spiering threw the final one and one-third inning, giving up one run on two hits.
Northwestern is scheduled to play Southwest Missouri State Saturday and Eastern Michigan Sunday to complete play at the McNeese State Tournament.
