Northwestern Baseball Defeats Northern Iowa 5-3

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern baseball team defeated the University of Northern Iowa 5-3, at the Rawlings/Oakland Athletics Spring Training Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz. With the win, Northwestern is declared tournament champion. NU defeated Kansas, 5-4, and St. Mary's (Calif.), 3-0. The `Cats are 3-1 in Phoenix, with its loss coming at the hands of Pacific (3-2). Both Northwestern and Kansas ended the tourney with 3-1 records. Northwestern is awarded the championship based on the head-to-head matchup. NU improves to 5-2 on the season.
Junior righthander Gabe Ribas started the seven inning contest throwing six and two thirds giving up three runs (all unearned) on eight hits. He struck out seven and walked none as NU committed five errors in the game.
Offensively, sophomore Eric Roeder continued to swing the bat well, as he drove in three runs on 2-for-4 hitting, with a double and a run scored. David Gresky was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk while, sophomore Ken Padgett had a pinch-hit single driving in one. Shortstop Frank Favia was 1-for-2 with a run scored and Wesley Robinson was 1-for-3 stroking a double.
