EVANSTON, ILL. - The Northwestern Men's tennis team won four out of six singles matches to defeat Michigan 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the Johnson Tennis Center. The Wildcats handed the Wolverines their first loss of the year. The victory moves the `Cats to 5-0 on the season, 1-0 in Big Ten play.

Northwestern had to overcome early struggles to prevail. The Wildcats lost two of three doubles matches to give the doubles point to the Wolverines. Joost Hol (Newport Beach, Calif./Foothill) was the first Northwestern player to post a victory, as he defeated Danny McCain (6-1, 6-4) to even the score at one a piece. The `Cats fell in the next two singles matches to find themselves down 3-1. Josh Axler (Huntington, NY/Walt Whitman) sparked the Wildcats' rally with a straight set victory over Chris Shaya (7-5, 6-2). Jamie Sahara (Santa Maria, Calif./Saint Joseph) followed minutes later handing Michigan's Greg Novak his first loss this year (6-3, 6-3). Sealing the win for Northwestern was senior captain Brad Erickson (Eugene, Ore./South Eugene) who downed the undefeated Ben Cox (6-3, 6-4).
